A Biography in brief of Dr.Prabhakar G. Shetty and his pioneering Research work on Diabetic foot & Gangrene.
- Dr.Malcolm Patel

Gangrene is the condition wherein a part of the body or tissue becomes dead or necrosed due to the lack of blood supply to the part or tissue.

More often than not there is a superadded infection to the dead part of the body or tissue.
Diabetic Foot is a complex of symptoms and signs which arise due to changes in the feet of persons who have Diabetes Mellitus for a long duration. These changes occur due to progressive loss of blood supply to the feet as a result of microangiopathy or macroangiopathy i.e. a diseased condition of either the small or larger blood vessels respectively. These vessels get progressively diseased due to the process of atherosclerosis which occurs at a faster rate in Diabetic individuals especially if the blood sugar levels are not within normal limits. These changes also occur in the blood vessels supplying the nerves called Vasa Nervosum. This leads to Neuropathy(disease of the nerves). The combined changes of angiopathy and neuropathy give rise to Diabetic Foot.

The most dreaded symptom of Diabetic foot is GANGRENE. Gangrene can also occur because of SMOKING, old age, etc.

Diabetic foot and especially Gangrene of the limbs(of various origin) were chosen by Dr. Prabhakar Shetty as the subjects of his research since the conditions posed a unique threat to the Human Being, as diabetic foot & gangrene were neither spontaneously curable, nor did they remit of their own and were not transient in origin.

These conditions were progressive, morbid and more often then not ended into fatality.
The only answer to the spectre of Gangrene has been the amputation of the limbs since the time of Hippocrates the Father of Modern medicine to the present age of Space Age Medicine.

Dr. Prabhakar G. Shetty was the first man to hearken to the words of Marchal de Calvi's(1864 - Surgeon) immortal words:
" Having amputed one leg, often the opposite leg is affected, gangrene sets in and soon the patients succumbs to the horrible suffering. Having relieved him of his local affliction (by amputation), I have done nothing but mutilate him."

Dr. Prabhakar G. Shetty realised soon enough that amputation of the affected part, without improving the flow of blood to the affected limb proved to be a futile exercise although it was life saving at times.

He devised a method of cure by way of which the flow of blood to the affected limbs improved dramatically largely due to the establishment of collateral vessels which were the off shoots of the primary large blood vessels which were blocked especially in cases of Diabetes.

Dr. Shetty carries on his wonderful work of giving a new life to the people who were otherwise resigned to their fate of inevitable amputation as a cost of keeping them alive.

Till date he has saved 2528 persons from major amputations(below knee and above knee). Dr. Shetty however maintains that prevention is better than cure and urges suffering humanity especially each and every person afflicted with diabetes to seek help earlier on, before gangrene sets in.

Dr. Shetty`s medicine is a must for persons who have already undergone amputation, to prevent amputation of the other limb and to increase the life expectancy of the individual dramatically.
